Karlshamn is a mix of old ‘quaint’ and modern industrial port town and is famous for being the launching point of many Swedes emigrating to America during the 19th century.
The monument below is a poignant sculpture depicting Karl and Kristina Oscar, the two primary characters in Vilhelm Moberg’s classic tale ‘The Emigrants’ with Karl looking forward to the new country and Kristina looking back to her beloved Sweden….

And finally………. we had our first taste today of a classic Swedish cake, the ‘Princess Cake’ or ‘Prinsesstårta’. This is sponge layers of cake alternating with jam, vanilla custard and whipped cream topped with a thin layer of bright green marzipan (surprisingly light but very sweet…..yum yum)
It was given its name because it was a favourite cake of the three Swedish Princes Margaretha, Martha and Astrid, daughters of Prince Carl brother of King Gustav V
