On our way to Östersund we stumbled across this 17th century iron smelting house in Klenshyttan. The local peasant farmers would farm the land in summer then in winter they would transport iron ore from the mines and charcoal from the woods to the smelting house. In the spring they would produce pig iron (and make good profit!)
The furnace is massive…..
then a few hours later we found ourselves this high above sea level……….
with snow still lying on the ground! (didn’t expect to see this)
Monday night stop wild camped in the forest by a lake (quiet and remote!)
with scary locals!
This morning (Tuesday) we found a convenient place to wash Wolfy by a river (maybe not very exciting for you but it was for us!)
The roads through the forest are very long, straight and tree lined. We saw nothing but forest for hundreds of kilometres.
Oh, and a sign warning of Skidoos……… haha (it is real)
then at the end of a busy and hot day we found a lovely place to stop right next to the lake in Östersund where we could watch the sun set (at 22:11). This photo was taken a few minutes ago at around 21:30. We are over 63 degrees North and although not yet ‘midnight sun’ it does stay light for a long time (only gets dark around 23:00 then light again just after 03:00)
Our plan from here is to drive to Strömsund tomorrow then take the ‘wilderness road’ to Norway!
Tara..
