The Island of Öland lies to the East of Kalmar in Sourthern Sweden in the Baltic Sea. Reached by a bridge and causeway the island is a World Heritage Site and full of historic buildings, ancient forts and stones, and nature reserves.
Cute house of the day…...
Or maybe this one? (much older)
One of the 400 or so remaining windmills on the island (once there was over 2000)
The ‘Kings Stones’, an ancient burial ground
This light house, on the South end of the island was built in the 19th century from stones taken from an old chapel…...
which used to be here (from about 1300)…….
Nice sunset at the end of the day (well it would be I’spose!)
Old disused harbour…..
Old but still in use harbour…..
and this vessel was the one that our fresh Baltic Cod was caught from (see E28). I saw a fisherman filleting fish in his hut and asked what they were and could I buy some? They turned out to be Cod and cost the princely sum of 100 Krona per Kilogram. I bought two fillets for the equivalent of £5.40…………nice!
While driving around the island (hundreds of standing stones) I noticed that these two stones are in line with the burial ground in the middle of the photo….
and also in line with the church in the distance !!!!!! (hmm?)
