After a brief night stop by yet another ferry pier (where we caught 8 big fat mackerel !) we continued our journey into ‘Fjord Norway’ towards the ‘Trollstigen’ (Troll Ladder) which is the mountain road that climbs up over the peaks in the distance...
Wolfy at the base of the Troll Ladder. Built in 1936, the road ahead is a 1:12 gradient climb up to the plateau at 700 metres above sea level...
Halfway up is this stone bridge which crosses the 320 metre high Stigfossen waterfall...
Once at the top you can clearly see the steep winding road with its 11 hairpin bends...
On the plateau at the top of the Trollstigen is this award winning visitor centre which incorporates the Stigfossen river ...
There is a wonderful network of walkways and viewpoints from the centre...
Don’t look down if you suffer from vertigo! (see Grahame in his yellow high viz cycle jacket?)
and if you do, then run back up the path as fast as you can!
The view looking back to the visitor centre as we continue towards Geiranger Fjord...
Then a gentle descent over many miles to make up for the exhausting climb up!
On the way down is a narrow gorge which funnels the Valldøla river creating a deep rock formation known as the ‘Giants Cauldron'
